The textile and clothing industry will steadily promote high-quality industrial development around expanding domestic demand, optimizing structure, boosting confidence, preventing and resolving risks, and maintain a recovery trend in the complex external environment. In 2023, there will be 860 specialized textile and clothing markets with an area of more than 10000 square meters in China, with a total turnover of 2.35 trillion yuan, up 10.11% year on year; The total turnover of 44 markets (including professional market groups) monitored by China Textile Federation Circulation Branch was 1.61 trillion yuan, up 15.86% year on year; The total turnover of professional markets basically recovered to the pre epidemic level.

Compared with that before the epidemic, the number of specialized textile and clothing markets with an area of more than 10000 square meters declined, but the market turnover was basically flat. China's specialized textile and clothing market has entered a new stage of total volume reduction and structural optimization.

   1、 Overall situation

According to the statistics of the circulation branch, in 2023, there will be 860 specialized textile and clothing markets above 10000 square meters in China, with a year-on-year growth of 0.70%; The market operation area was 73083000 square meters, up 0.43% year on year; The number of shops in the market was 1.348 million, up 0.29% year on year; The number of merchants in the market was 1.091 million, up 0.26% year on year; The total market turnover was 2.35 trillion yuan, up 10.11% year on year.

The number of professional textile and clothing markets with an area of more than 10000 square meters in China will decline from 915 in 2018 to 854 in 2022 (Chart 1). In 2023, the total size of the market will rise slightly, and a small number of new markets will be opened nationwide, making the investment and construction more rational.

Transaction growth. From 2018 to 2023, the year-on-year growth rate of total turnover of professional markets will be 3.85%, -1.08%, -2.22%, 1.98%, -8.54% and 10.11% respectively. In 2023, the market turnover will achieve a rapid growth of more than 10%, returning to the pre epidemic level and reaching the highest value in the past five years (Chart 1).

4、 Textile and garment professional market in 2023 Operational analysis

(1) Data analysis

1. Professional market turnover recovered to the pre epidemic level

From 2020 to 2022, China's textile and clothing circulation sector was hit by the epidemic, and the professional market was under pressure. There was a gap between the total turnover and that before the epidemic. In 2023, the turnover of the textile and clothing professional market will return to the pre epidemic level, and the industry leading market will make great contributions to the overall recovery of turnover; The 44 markets (groups) monitored by the Circulation Branch created a turnover of 1.61 trillion yuan, accounting for 68.51% of the total turnover of the country.

2. Professional market volume reduction and structure optimization

In recent years, China's textile and clothing professional market has been in excess of the total amount, serious homogenization competition, more zombie markets, polarization and other conditions. After three years of the impact of the epidemic, the number of textile and clothing professional markets, business area, number of shops, number of merchants, turnover and so on above 10000 square meters in China have decreased correspondingly; While the total volume decreased, the turnover of the professional market recovered and basically recovered to the pre epidemic level. It can be seen that China's textile and clothing professional market is accelerating on the high-quality development path of reducing the total volume and optimizing the structure.

3. The operating efficiency of professional market reached the highest level in six years

In 2023, the operating efficiency, shop efficiency and merchant efficiency of China's textile and clothing professional market will reach the highest value in nearly six years, exceeding the pre epidemic level. The improvement of industry efficiency reflects that fewer markets create greater value, which is an intuitive representation of the optimization of market structure and the significance of high-quality development. The shuffle of China's textile and clothing professional market is still continuing, and the Matthew effect is still obvious. The excellent market and business circle will continue to attract more high-quality resources.

4. The professional market in the eastern region has strong anti risk ability

Figure 9 Growth Curve of Market Turnover in Eastern, Central and Western Regions

Data source: China Textile Federation Circulation Branch

Since 2020, the turnover of professional markets in the eastern region has fluctuated relatively little, while the turnover of professional markets in the central and western regions has declined by more than 15% for many times during the epidemic period; It can be seen that the textile and clothing professional market in the eastern region has a stronger ability to resist risks and maintains a relatively stable development trend in the great changes in the external market environment. On the other hand, the professional market in the central and western regions is full of development resilience. After experiencing a significant decline in 2022, it achieved significant growth in 2023, and the market transaction scale basically returned to the pre epidemic level; Among them, Hanzhengjie Market Business District, Lusong Market Business District, Chaotianmen Market Business District and other leading markets have played the role of mainstay and played a huge leading role in restoring the growth of the overall turnover of the central and western markets (Figure 9).

(2) Professional market enters a new development stage

1. The consumer market has recovered and the consumption structure has undergone profound changes

In 2023, with the implementation of a series of stable growth policies and measures to expand domestic demand and boost confidence, residents' employment and income will be steadily restored, which will constitute an important support for consumption. China's domestic consumption potential will continue to release, bringing greater market space to the professional market. In 2023, the consumption scale hit a new high again. According to the data of the National Bureau of Statistics, the retail sales of clothing, shoes and hats, and knitwear and textiles of units above the designated size nationwide increased by 12.9% year on year in 2023, a sharp increase of 19.4 percentage points over 2022, and the overall retail scale exceeded the pre epidemic level; In 2023, the retail sales of online wearing goods in China will increase by 10.8% year on year, 7.3 percentage points higher than that in 2022. With the growth of consumption scale and the change of consumption structure, Chinese consumers have experienced the epidemic situation for three years, and their sensitivity to clothing prices has significantly improved. Their concern for brand awareness is declining, and their pursuit of cost performance is increasing year by year. It is precisely matched with the product positioning of the professional market, and has obtained new development space.

2. Reduce traditional path dependence and deeply participate in e-commerce division of labor

In recent years, the rapid development of China's logistics and transportation industry, the explosive growth of live broadcast e-commerce, and the replacement of the main consumer groups have brought challenges to the layer by layer distribution of traditional clothing distribution mode. The three-year epidemic has accelerated the consumption reform and mode iteration of the clothing industry. In China's textile and clothing professional market, it actively reduces the dependence on traditional paths, and in the new division of labor, Establish new positioning.

In 2023, the professional textile and clothing market will actively promote the integrated development of online and offline, and continue to make efforts in two aspects: self support live broadcast empowerment and professional e-commerce supply.

On the one hand, professional markets build live broadcast bases to enable online transformation of offline merchants. For example, Changshu has built a broadcasting and supply base for Changshu Yigou Cross Union Men's Wear Shop, officially opened a live broadcast e-commerce base for the clothing market of China Light Textile City, and professional markets across the country have actively built live broadcast e-commerce bases to enable offline business entities and create a new platform for online and offline integrated development.

On the other hand, e-commerce supply has also become the main growth point of turnover in professional markets. The textile and clothing professional market business circles all over the country have created professional e-commerce supply markets, such as Daying market in Humen market business circle, China Qingchuangcheng market in Shishi market business circle, Qinghe cashmere town market group, etc. These clothing e-commerce leading clusters have taken the lead in developing a unique monomer market that provides clothing supply chain for e-commerce. In some local garment markets in China, the supply scale of e-commerce has accounted for more than 50% of the total turnover.

3. The response speed of merchants has improved, and winter clothing products are selling well

In the first half of 2023, the merchants of China's textile and clothing professional market are keenly aware of the recovery of the consumer market and predict the good prospects of winter clothing sales. Merchants actively reserve the surface accessories and filling materials required for down jackets and cotton padded clothes, and actively stock up under the dual pressure of cost and inventory, achieving a good start to the first round of sales of winter clothing. In the fourth quarter, the demand for winter clothing market broke out again. On the one hand, abnormal weather frequently occurred throughout the country, and cold winter entered everywhere; On the other hand, winter ice and snow tourism has set off an upsurge in the country, which has generated a large number of consumer demand for winter clothing, thermal insulation products, ice and snow sports clothing and equipment in a short period of time. The merchants in the professional market are keen to catch the market demand, quickly integrate the supply chain, give full play to the flexibility and agility of SMEs and small and medium-sized merchants in the professional market, create a high-quality fast reaction chain, successfully accept the blowout consumption demand, and achieve a significant increase in turnover.

4. After the epidemic, industrial activities increased and regional exchanges intensified

2023 is the first year that the epidemic policy is fully liberalized. The number of activities in the textile and clothing industry has increased significantly. All regions have actively held industrial activities to ignite the enthusiasm for circulation.

In terms of exhibitions, the Spring and Autumn Joint Exhibition of China Textile Industry Federation was grandly opened, radiating and driving the acceleration of high-quality resources in the whole industry chain, and continuing to inject new momentum into the high-quality development of the industry. The 30th China • Qinghe International Cashmere and Woolen Products Fair, 2023 Guangzhou International Light Textile City Accessories (Autumn and Winter) Purchasing Festival, 2023 Guangzhou White Horse Clothing Purchasing Festival, 2023 the 12th China (Honghe) Sweater Culture Festival, 2023 the 20th China (Dalang) International Woolen Products Fair, 2023 Haining China • International Home Textiles (Autumn) Expo The 23rd China Jiangsu (Changshu) Clothing Expo and the 6th China Hanzheng Street Clothing Expo were held consecutively, which demonstrated the strong strength of China's textile clothing cluster market and played a huge role in promoting the turnover.

In terms of fashion activities, various places have held fashion week and fashion week activities to integrate industrial resources, gather design talents, promote the textile and clothing fashion industry to become stronger and larger, and build fashion week and fashion week activities into an important incubator for local brands. SS2024 Red Cotton International Fashion Week, SS24 Oriental Fashion Season · Qingdao Fashion Week, 2023 Guangdong Fashion Week, 2023 Haining China International Fashion Week, and 2023 Suzhou International Fashion Week were held consecutively, demonstrating the design level and fashion charm of China's textile and clothing industry cluster.

In terms of industry exchange, China's textile and clothing cluster market has paid close attention to the development prospect of the industry, held wonderful summit forums, built in-depth exchange platforms for industry experts, and worked together for a new future of industrial development. The 2023 China (Tianmen) Garment E-commerce Industry Summit was held in Tianmen City, the 2023 China Textile and Garment E-commerce Industry Conference was held in Humen, the theme conference of the 2023 Sixth World Cloth Conference was held in Keqiao, the 2023 China Industry Transfer and Development Docking Event (Guangxi) was held in Nanning, and the 2023 China Socks Industry High Quality Development Roundtable was held in Zhuji, The 2023 Xinjiang Textile and Garment Industry High Quality Development Conference was held in Urumqi, and the 2023 China Garment Industry Chain Innovation and Development Summit Forum was held in Haicheng. After three years of pressure from the epidemic, textile and clothing industry clusters and professional market business circles all over China have become more aware of the importance of industrial cooperation, constantly expanding the "circle of friends" in industrial activities, establishing new relationships and alliances, and contributing to accelerating the smooth circulation of production, circulation and consumption in the industry.

epilogue
