Japanese Clothing Imports Declined By 9.60% (1-4 Months, 2020)

The global new crown pneumonia epidemic has seriously weakened the Japanese apparel retailing industry, forcing Japanese retail stores to close on a large scale. From January to April 20th, Japan imported 903 billion 500 million yen (US $8 billion 410 million) garments, down 9.6% from the same period last year. According to the data, Japan's imports of 2 billion 76 million kilograms of clothing from around the world dropped by 8.80%.

Japan's imports of clothing to Vietnam amounted to 149 billion 290 million yen (US $1 billion 390 million), an increase of 4.81% over the same period last year. China exported 486 billion 50 million yen (US $4 billion 530 million) clothing to Japan in the first 4 months of 2020, down 14.43% compared with the same period last year, while India's export value was 11 billion 710 million yen (110 million US dollars), a decrease of 21.58% over the same period last year. Bangladesh exported 465 billion 900 million yen (US $434 million) to Japan, down 3.04% from the same period last year.
