Clothing Import Restriction

Argentina media reported that the Argentina government is considering a series of measures to cope with the challenges of the financial crisis, including restricting imports of certain products, ensuring exchange rate stability and freezing wages.

The report points out that Argentina will first strengthen enforcement of import restrictions, of which Chinese products will be greatly affected.

At present, the Argentina government has stepped up its enforcement of anti-dumping investigations on China's imports and implemented measures such as non automatic import licenses.

According to past experience, clothing, shoemaking, toys, manufactured goods and so on may become the main target of restriction.

The government of Argentina is considering restricting imports, mainly in order to ensure that the trade surplus is roughly the same as last year, so as to maintain the state's solvency.

Since the last 2007 years, clothing, shoemaking, toys, manufactured goods and other industries in Argentina have put pressure on the government to restrict imports of Chinese products and protect domestic industries.

Although Argentina's imports of China's textiles and garments were not large, it was $327 million in 2007, accounting for only 2/1000 of the total export volume of Chinese textile garments, but the growth rate was very high, reaching 227.9%.

Today (2008) 1~8 imports of textiles and garments in Argentina have reached US $305 million, up 55.54% from the same period last year.
